As you probably know, RPG Maker 2000 (commonly refered too as rm2k) is by far the most popular and widely supported RPG maker out there. There are dozens of websites completely dedicated too the maker, and you won't have any trouble finding resources, both in graphica/musical form and tutorials.

What is RPG Maker 2000? RPG Maker 2000 (RM2K for short) is an updated form of RPG Maker 95+. What is that? It's a program developed for Win32 operating systems that allows users to create, play, and distribute their own computer-based role-playing games.

Until recently, this program was a Japan-only phenomenon. However, thanks to the ever-so-cool Don Miguel, the English-speaking world now has access to this marvelous tool! RM2K also has a strong following in the German corner of the Internet, and the Don has also made a Russian translation.

As you create your game, you plot out the maps, you write the dialogue, you set up the triggers, and you devise the skills. You create the characters and the story. You design the monsters and input all the stats. It's time-consuming sometimes, but very rewarding when you finish a product you can be proud of!

What Do I Need to get Started?
You need two things to get started making your own RPG's: the RPG Maker 2000 program itself, and the English-language version of the Run-Time Package. The RM2K Help File is not absolutely neccessary, but it is helpful.

RM2k is the actual program you will use. It is what allows you to edit maps, set positions, create your heroes, create your monsters, and all that jazz.

The Help File is exactly what it sounds like. It's a Windows help file. Unfortunately, you have to download it seperately from RM2K. It was translated at a much slower pace (understandable, since it contains much, much text), and so was not included with the original English-translated program. It's a good thing to use, unless you prefer to muddle blindly through.

The Run-Time Package (RTP) is the meat of your game. As such, it's a big freaking download. But, it is neccessary. RM2K won't run without it. You need it anyway, since it contains all the sounds, music, and pictures to get you started. It contains:

FaceSets - Close-ups of characters.
BattleSets - Battle animation sprites.
Monsters - Images to represent your game's monsters.
CharSets - Animated sprites for people, animals, and objects.
ChipSets - Blocks for making maps.
SystemSets - Templates for displaying text boxes and the like.
Sounds - Self-explanatory.
